NOVA Fashion – Pentagon City – photography

The second of the Fashion NoVA events by Northern Virginia Magazine was held at the Fashion Center at Pentagon City Mall last Saturday. This mall has a grand atrium that opens from the bottom, to the top – 4 stories above with a space-frame glass roof. This was much different from the last show. Although enclosed, the show seemed larger with the noise, and amount of people that came to watch the show and view the demonstrations. Around the runway were stores that had pop-up shops with some of their products and people to demonstrate their latest.

The show was hosted this time by Ms. DC, Ericka Thomas who did a great job introducing the designs, and raffling off give-away prizes from attending stores.

The models for the show were prepped with hair and makeup by the Paul Mitchell School of Tysons Corner. They arrived early, and worked quickly to get ready and dressed with designs from Ann TaylorCacheExpressThe LimitedWhite House Black Market, and Macy’s. It was a coordinated effort by the organizers and stylists to get the show ready, but they worked efficiently to it done by showtime.

It was another successful show! This weekend, there will be another in the series at Tysons Corner Mall, but I will not be covering that one. It will be focusing on high-end designers, so it should be a great showcase for the designers and models alike. For more information on the show, please go to the Fashion NoVA site here.

2 Days Until Fall Freestyles

©TimeLine Media - Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles Team Match

Tysons, Virginia

It is only 2 days until the Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles. This Friday and Saturday in Tysons Corner, Arthur Murray studios from around the region will bring their staff and students to show off their new moves on the dance floor. We are going to be there to photograph all the dancing on both days. After the event, we will edit the photos, then post them to our proofing website. That is where we post all the photos from our events. If you would like to be notified as soon as the photos are ready to view, you can go here and sign up for the email list:

http://proofs.timelinedc.com

I will send out a note to everyone on the list there as soon as they photos are viewable. It is a lot of work after the event to get them up, so it does take a good week to complete. I will go through each of the photos, crop them down so you can really see the subject, fix and color or exposure problems, then we sort each of the photos by studio. This helps to find your photos after the event. It can be difficult to find when photos are only sorted by time of dancing, so we do this extra step to make it easier and fun to find your images. You will be viewing photos of people at your studio instead of random people that were dancing with you at the same time.

Potomac Cup

One of our favorite things to photograph is the Potomac Cup Team Match. The schools from Maryland and Virginia pick a theme to represent their side of the river. Then dancers from each level are paired up from different schools, and dance to a song and danced picked as they are ready to dance. These are unique images that I know we cannot get anywhere else! Contact the studios if you would like to get access to watch any of the dancing this weekend. There is a balcony overlooking the dance floor so come by!

Fire Dancer photography

Jo responded to a request I sent from the TimeLine Media mailing list. At this time, I am exploring making action photos of athletes and dancers off of their field of play. I have plenty of photos of dancers on the dance floor in competition, and sports photos of players on the field. However, what I am looking to do is make more photos of these talented people displaying their skill in different ways for the camera. In a nearby park, there was a spot that I thought would be a beautiful place for photos.

River Bank Setting

There are some advantages to this area – with all the trees, any sunlight can be diffused. At this time, this setup photos was done in the late fall with almost all the leaves gone from the trees. For now, the leaves are still on the trees which blocked a lot of the light down near the forest floor. When scouting places for photos, look for these – where there is plenty of shade and even light.

Flash Setup

Next, I brought in my flash to light up Jo. I gelled the flash with an orange gel to match the light coming off his sword when it was on fire. I left the White Balance in the camera to daylight to keep the especially orange cast from the light. It matched up nicely!

One thing that I was not expecting was the sound! As Jo would turn the flaming sword around, there was likewise a great swooshing sound that really added to the effect. When I usually see these performances, there is music and other distracting elements, and the sound of the flaming sword is minimized. On this session, though, it was amazing!

I was impressed with how well he handles this flaming sword. Even touching it with his tongue! I tried to show as much of the motion and control that Jo displays at his performances. It was an amazing subject that I hope to get a chance to photograph again!
