Washington, D.C.

Although I usually just casually pass by the monuments, powerful governments offices, and museums as a regular part of my commute, there are occasions when playing tourist in your closest city pays off. When my father was still shuttling us around, he tried to impress upon me all of the shortcuts to get around, the backways to get in and out of the city, and the best landmarks for pictures. He always loved to play tour guide when out-of-town visitors would come to visit. Washington was much the same for him as it is for me – a place that’s not exactly local, not completely familiar, yet is accessible for exploration all-year round. It is a privilege for sure! Please pass along what are your favorite spots to visit when you are in the capital city.

Happy New Year!

I miss 2007 already with new year just a few days old. The Hokies fell short at the Orange Bowl, and the Redskins just ended their up and down and up season with a loss last night. With this in mind, the sports fandom closes down for another year. Now, I start going through my photos from the holiday season.

Obviously Christmas decor donned on walls and in the background make for pleasing indicators of the time of year. While we do not have many at home, our relatives go out of their way to deck their halls. So, I take advantage of them when it fits well for the photos.

Aside from the sports, everything else seems to be going well! Family is happy and healthy, and I’m hopeful for progressing in my new career in 2008. Taking a page from my cousin Renato, I will attempt to update my blog more often to keep track of where I am, and where I’m going. So here are some pics form Christmas in D.C. and New Year’s celebrations.

Happy New Year!!!

First week

I have worked my first week with a working professional photographer in downtown Washington D.C. It has been a lot of work, looking at images, reviewing, converting, uploading, ordering. Not only do I have to do these tasks, but I have to learn the workflow of someone else. Being that she is a very successful photographer with a lot of jobs to work on, I am getting into the groove as quickly as I can. There is much more to do on the back end than I thought, a little overwhelming actually!

A new (used) Nikon D200 arrived today. This was a needed tool for me to continue my new career path. My aging D100 is no longer acceptable as a “professional” tool. I hope the new body will serve me as well as the old! I downloaded a freeware program, Opanda IExif to see that the used D200 only had 1400 actuations on the shutter prior to my receiving it. Good news as I need practice with this thing before my next wedding!

Although I have not heard comments on my images that they are not professional, sometimes you need to upgrade your camera gear if that is holding you back. Presently, the new job has given me the funds to invest in a new camera body. With this purpose in mind, it will hopefully be a good investment as I can get more work soon. Subsequently, I may have better images to post to the blog soon!
