Photography Websites

It has never been easier to share your photos online. I can remember in the first years of the web how magical it was to download photos. Using a web browser was so easy. Comparatively you had to download individual files from a gopher or FTP site. Then open the photos in a separate JPG or GIF viewing program. With the browser, you had an experience that was much easier to view a collection of photos in an album-like setting.

Websites Sharing

Now, social media networks heavily encourage the sharing of images online. With the price that Facebook paid to acquire Instagram, it is not surprising to see where they see the most participation in their users. With all the social networks, though, there is a tradeoff for photographers. Because all of these networks are free to sign up, participate, and share, the companies need to make revenue somewhere. YOU and your photos are now the currency that these networks use to grow their business. In some small parts, they are taking your photos and using them to get more people to share and participate, and they hope, get them to patronize their advertisers.

To take more control over this natural give and take, I believe all photographers should have their own web space that they are paying for, and maintaining themselves. It has never been easier to reserve your own domain name, and sign up with a web host with all the gigabytes of storage you need for a minimal cost. If you are bothered by these social networks “stealing” your images to use, this is the best way to display your photos online. I post a little on these as a way to drive traffic to my personal website!

Speaking of which, my portfolio website is currently undergoing and exciting revision! I am switching over to a new service for showing off my best images. I will post more when the transition is finished, and I would love to hear what my blog readers think of the changes!

TimeLine Media Proofing Site Upgrades

Panorama of Belmont Bay - iPhone 5

Whew! The upgrades to the TimeLine Media proofing site are now completed. Additionally, the changes were implemented without any hitches so far. I would like to ask a favor of those of you that have visited the site before. Could you please come back and visit the website to see if you run into any bugs? If there are any issues, I would like to see if they can be fixed before the next big event. Of course it is completely free to view, and share the photos online as always. However, if you find a photo you want as a print or digital download, you can enter the coupon code:

This will take $5 off any order placed until next Monday. I have tested the site myself, and it works for me, but experiences can be different when many people try. It is not much different in appearance from the previous version, but here is what the new site looks like!

As far as new features, there is a mobile site that is better for mobile phones to access photos. This version of the site will allow the images to be loaded faster than with the full site. In this site, you can view all the photos on the website, and mark some of your favorites as you see them. You cannot, though, purchase any products in the mobile version of the site. In order to place orders, you need to switch to the Full Site version which you can do from the Home page. Here is a screen shot of where you can switch between the 2 versions if needed:

Once you click on the “View full site” you will switch to the version of the site where purchases can be made from your smart phone. The full site is the default version of the site that will be shown when you are on a PC, iMac or an iPad which have larger screens. Please note that if you do may purchases on iPads or other mobile devices, you need to immediately save your photos locally to your device. The website only allows one download of your photo per purchase by default. I can reset that for you, but it would be easier to just save your download as soon as you see it.

Thanks again, and let me know how it goes. I’ll leave you with at least one photo looking across Belmont Bay to my hometown of Woodbridge, VA – taken by my mobile phone, and developed with the Snapseed app from Google:

Proofing Website

This upcoming Wednesday, I am planning an upgrade to the proofing website. The current site is working just fine, but there is a new version of the software available. There are some features that some of you have requested including a simple slideshow for viewing your photos. There is also a version that is specifically made for iPad users! Smartphone and iPads are used to view the websites more and more, so I am looking to make sure you get the full experience going forward.

On Wednesday, I will close the proofing website for testing. The self tests on the website should not take long, so there should be a seamless transition to the new software. I will post here on the blog when it is completed. Please try it out and let me know how you like the new features. If there are any issues, I will work to get them fixed before the next new event. Of course, I would be happy to help if there is something you cannot find n there. Thank you!
