Day 1 – New Jersey State Open

We have safely made it to Atlantic City! This weekend is the 2013 New Jersey State Open. We have two full days of dancing ahead of us. All of the lights and cameras are setup, so we are ready to go as of 6:30AM on Friday. It is a 7AM start on both days, so you can watch all day if you are in the area. The venue is the Grand Ballroom of the Golden Nugget – Atlantic City, and I think the dancers will enjoy the setting. We will have plenty of pictures to share from the weekend to be sure! When they are ready, you can go to the proofing website to view all of them here:

You can give us your email address there if you want to be notified as soon as they are ready to view. We will also be posting the notice at our Facebook page. If you like the page, you will receive updates on the photos to your feed. Afterwards, please give me some feedback on the images. I enjoy making them, and put a lot of work into them. However, I know we can always do better, and would like to hear suggestions. Thank you!

Special Event Lighting – Tech Thursday

White Balance

When shooting color images, digital photography gives us a lot more flexibility in color balance. This is usually one of the first options that photo applications will let you adjust in your photos. In Adobe Lightroom, they call this “Temperature” referring to the Kelvin setting in degrees. On the lower end of the scale are the “cooler” or bluer settings starting at 2000K. On the other end is going to the “warmer” or yellower settings 10000K to 50000K.

Similarly to a previous post which I talked about bouncing the light off of colored walls, having mixed lighting sources will also affect the look of your photos. At events where there is lighting setup to set a mood for the room, you will have strongly colored constant lights. These will usually be tinted with a gel or LEDs that can make every kind of color possible. This can be difficult to balance, as now there are competing sources of color in your frames.

My thought in this situation is to use my flash to get the best exposure I can at the time. Having a good exposure means I can work with the file more easily in Lightroom later. The dance events usually has changing lights, so I cannot do a good white balance for each color, I just have to make a good exposure.

Back in Lightroom, I use the temperature and tint sliders to ensure that the skin of subjects in the frame looks good. It may not be exactly their skin tone as you see it, but neither is their color on the dance floor flooded with colored light. The downside is that the colored light in the background, or the ambient color of the room may change, but skin tones are my only concern. Whatever colors happen to change in the background or other room elements will have to be left as is. Let me know what you guys do when facing these room a wedding receptions, or other setups with special event lighting.

Tysons, Virginia

If you have recently been to the Tysons Corner Center in McLean, VA, you may have noticed the new HGTV pop-up store that has opened in the Fashion Court near Bloomingdale’s and L.L. Bean. This showroom has many examples of the latest materials and designs for home furnishings featured on their television network.

Inside the store is an array of resources for your home design needs. There are designers available to discuss your specific projects, and they can show you examples of paint, flooring, and lighting right in the store. On Saturday, this was a busy place. Lots of guests came by to feel the materials hanging in the displays, and getting ideas on how to change their interiors.

Just outside the store by the elevator, HGTV has also setup some furniture and displays with their programming. Resting shoppers can be inspired by more of their design choices. They have a nice D.C. autumn backdrop where you can make photo and send to your email with their photo booth!

It is here that designer Taniya Nayak made an appearance to meet fans of her shows. She took lots of time to meet with everyone that waited in line to see her. Some brought pictures of their on-going projects to get ideas. With each one that came by, she took lots of time to meet, sign autographs, and give her design advice.

It was a pleasure to meet her and the staff that worked at the pop-up showroom. If you are in the middle of a home design project, you should definitely stop by before November 8. The store will then move on from this location, so take advantage of the opportunity before then!
