Bachata Masters

Rockville, Maryland

Last Saturday evening, I was invited to photograph the Bachata Masters event held at the Rendezvous Social Dance Club. This is the latest event in a series that Kat, the owner of Ferocity Dance Company, has organized. It has been a lot of fun at each but the energy at this particular one was at another level!

Dance Workshop

These are always well attended by so many dancers of varying experience levels. Throughout the day, the workshop to learn new techniques, and refine styling, then come back at night to party, dance, and show off their new moves. It is awesome to see so many friends new and old that request to dance and they really have a great time dancing to the music played by DJ EMERZIVE & DJ RENZO.

At the middle point of all the dancing, the floor was cleared for some featured Showcases. This was a treat for everyone that was in attendance. The lineup included Ferocity Dance Company, Alma DC, the headlines, DANIEL & DESIRÉE – World Bachata Masters Champions from Spain. I setup my lights to get some cool images of all the performances. It was a great audience for these performers and they were so responsive for what they were seeing. If you get a chance, please look for videos of these performances online – they were fun to watch, and I looked for them since I was busy at the time!

Updating Headshots – Tech Tuesday

College Park, Maryland

Last week, I was booked for an assignment for updating headshots on location. This is yet another different kind of photography project that has its own challenges compared to the events I have been covering lately. In one sense, I had a lot of time to setup for this shoot arriving early at the location, with plenty of time to situate myself before anyone had arrived. You can make a portrait lighting setup as simple or as complicated as you want, but this was a very special event, so I brought out all the big guns. I setup the on-site studio with 4 monolight flashes. If you were following me on Twitter or Instagram, I sent out photos after I had set everything up.

This setup made it very easy to make headshots for everyone quickly which was the goal. The organizers were expecting 300 attendees, so I did not want to have a line of people that did not have the opportunity to get a photo at the end of the night. Having lots of lights setup correctly before the first photo was taken was essential to making as many photos happen as possible. Having a dedicated light meter on hand to measure the output from the flashes ensured that everything was setup right where it needed to be – from the placement of the posing chair, to the kicker light that would separate the subjects from the background.

Mobile Lighting Setup

Using a hand-held meter really reduced the amount of “test shots” I needed to make with the camera. When I took the first shot after metering everything manually, the lights were ready to go! I was so happy with the setup, and I hope that the people that came in for their new portraits like the results. Thanks to the University of Maryland University College Alumni Association for having me provide this service for them. I had a great time with their recent graduates, and made some awesome photos of them! If you need updated head shot portraits for commercial work or social networking, please let me know. Photo Event Updates

Bethesda, Maryland

There are two big deadlines to the proofing website that I want to post here. Today is the last day for you to view and purchase photos from the USA Dance 2014 Mid-Atlantic Championships. This was the first big ballroom dance event that we covered this year. Moreover it was a great success for both the dancers, and for us as photographers! The web server has been very busy sending out images from this event since February’s release, to last weekend. After today, the photos will be removed from the server to make room for new events. The other deadline for today is the ending early-bird sale for the DC Area Arthur Murray 2014 Spring Showcase. There were some great routines in both the Smooth and Rhythm rooms, and we have photos from each of them at the website. There have been a few of you that have been designing albums from this event combining them with photos from the Spring Freestyles. If you did not know already, we can make albums of your photos, and you can use any image from events that we cover to be added to the book! Here is the link to the images from this event:

Thanks to everyone that has visited the website this year to view their images! It has been fun to see them going around the social networks. We try our best to have the best ballroom dance photos, and we love to see such nice comments when posted online. Please pass along the links to the events to any of your friends that attended and have not yet seen their images. I really would like people to at least see all their hard work that they put into dance preserved in our collections.
