His Dream of Lions – Music Photography

Tysons Corner Center

Photographing musicians while they are performing is one of the most dynamic subjects you can put in front of your lens. In this shoot at Tysons Corner Center, they transformed an open area into a stage where 4 different bands competed. The prize for the competition was to be the opening act for the grand opening of an outdoor space in Tysons Corner later this summer! The bands were diverse in their looks and musical styles making for a great showcase of their talents.

The first band that performed was His Dream of Lions from Fairfax, VA. It can be tough to be the first act out of the gate, but it was no problem for them! They really brought the sound and energy that was needed to get the crowd into the show. For the shoot, I first concentrated on getting photos of the whole group as they performed to show how they arranged themselves on stage, and how they looked from an audience-member perspective.

Battle of the Bands

Once I had a few of those, I changed to a longer lens to get in closer. The lead singer was really giving a great performance. As a band’s front man, you really need to be comfortable in the spotlight, and emote enthusiasm and excitement to the people watching. He was definitely playing to the audience and produced some awesome energy for the crowd.

Once all the settings are dialed into the camera, it is just tracking, and waiting for the right moment to release the shutter. Capturing moments that try to tell the story of the performance takes a little patience. Even though they would only play for one song,  you still cannot motor drive with the camera. That only makes for more work later. Wait until the right moment when you will see some dynamic action from the performers, and they will deliver! It was a great start to the show.

USA Dance Mid-Atlantic Championships Expiring

Bethesda, Maryland

Expiring in one week – the photos from the USA Dance Mid-Atlantic Championships photos. They were originally supposed to expire today, but I because it slipped on my schedule, I had the web service extend the deadline until next Monday. I want to give lots of notice to you before they are removed since it is harder to get to them once they go to the archives. There is now one week left to view and order photos from this event before the images are removed from the proofing website. Here is a direct link to all the photos:

I am posting some of the images from this event since it has been a while since I have gone back to look at them. It does not seem like that long ago for this event, but it is time to make more room for other images on the website. This is the reason I need to move out these events after a few months.

USA Dance Expiring

If you visited the website already and ordered some of your favorites – thank you for supporting our photography! My team of photographers really worked hard to cover this 2 day event. We covered all the heats, and tried our best to capture everyone that competed. It was nice to see many familiar faces!

The organizers, judges, and dancers were having fun catching up with us, and viewing their previews at our booth. It adds to the fun when we recognize many of you on the dance floor. We like to see you progress in levels, and take you dancing to the next level every year! Please pass along the link to our events to anyone that is new, or has not seen our work. It is always a great event to attend, and we hope to be invited back again next year.

Friday the 13th

It’s a full moon tonight, and on Friday the 13th too! I know there are some crazy stats on how many times that congruence has happened, and how many years it will be until it will happen again. It will be a cloudy evening for us in the metro DC area. So, it will not be a good night for moon watching. I will have the camera at the ready in case there is a break in the clouds! Here are some photos from a less cloudy day in DC.

We walked back to the Smithsonian Castle to get more exterior photos in the gardens at this time. It is always nice to get a second chance at a shoot. This is something that is impossible in most situations. At sporting events, weddings, or corporate presentations, you only get one chance to capture the images that they are wanting. Practice with my gear is really needed in personal shoots like these photo walks. It gets me familiar with all the different settings, where all the buttons are located on the camera body, and how to dial them in. I remember something that I used on this walk to help with the events I covered over the weekend. Moreover I will probably use on my next shoot.

The red bricks of the castle really pop out nicely in high dynamic range photos. With the sun high in a partly cloudy sky, the background becomes a beautiful blue. After putting the bracketed images through the HDR processor, you can really boost the structure of the bricks, and the color of sky to make them contrast nicely. I was much happier with the image I was able to get from this walk through than the one a few weeks ago. It was much later in the evening, the sun was a little closer to the horizon giving more direction to the light.
