Arthur Murray – Tysons Corner Tango | Dance Photographer

Tysons, Virginia

Less than ten days until the Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles! I am getting excited about going back to photographing ballroom dancing. It has been great to go through the photos from the Summer Showcase as I put up the voting on the TimeLine Media Facebook page. I made posters from each of the 13 shows from the last event as “Superhero” posters. The top vote getters will be displayed at the Summer Showcase in a large print for the winning studios to take with them to display wherever they like. Here is the poster that I selected from this Arthur Murray Tysons Corner show:

Tango Staff Show

This was a fun show and poster – for one, I love the Tango Red worn by the dancers. It was the first professional show for the gentlemen, one the enthusiastic teachers at our studio. From the first time I met him, the Tango has seemed to be one of his favorite dances to perform! For the lady, it would be the last as she moved to a different studio since then. Of course we miss her as a local teacher, but we are happy that we will still see her at the events, and hopefully she will do more shows!

Of course all of them are amazing dancers, but she is a very technical teacher that brings an element of athleticism to her dancing. She encourages more movement and energy from her students which helps them perform better when in front on the judges. Practicing with energy and effort helps to calm the nerves!

Panning and Tracking | Tech Tuesday

Hope everyone had a great Labor Day holiday yesterday! It was a nice three day weekend, and it was nice to have a break from working on the computer. However, I did not take a break from the camera. I covered the last of the Tysons Corner Center concert series on Friday, helped a colleague cover a wedding ceremony and reception on Saturday, and Sunday was a track day!

I went out to Summit Point Raceway in Summit Point, WV to photograph cars racing in the Labor Day Double. There were lots of races throughout the warm day, and we had some rain storms come through during one of the runs.

Trying to photograph race cars as they speed by on the track is a fun photography challenge! As with all photos, I try to get as clean a background as I can. Around the track, there are areas where there are not too many tire barriers, but these are hard to avoid. What helps to clean up the background is to blur it out of focus by panning, or following the cars with the camera as it goes by.

If you have a slow enough shutter speed, only the car body will be in focus, and everything else in motion will be nicely blurred. This includes the wheels and tires on the car making a much more dynamic image. If your shutter speed is too fast, your car may be in sharp focus, but the wheels will be sharp. It may look as if the car is just sitting motionless on the track!

Set your camera’s auto focus to track subjects, then pan along with the cars as they go by and fire off the shutter as many times as the motor drive will allow. You will have a much better chance of getting at least one photo in sharp focus, with motion shown in the wheels. It takes me a few races before I really start to feel confident in getting good images. It is a fun subject to spend the day shooting!

Andy Grammer at Tysons Corner Center | Virginia Music Photographer

Play on the Plaza

Last Friday was another beautiful evening at Tysons Corner Center. On this occasion, the 94.7 Fresh Artists Concert Series welcomed Andy Grammer to the stage! He came and sang solo with just his guitar. Additionally he did some beat-boxing / mouth drumming thrown in. It highlighted the great reverb in the space between the large buildings around the Plaza.

If you listen to pop music radio Andy Grammer will have a familiar sound with his tracks getting a lot of airtime including, “Keep Your Head Up”, “Fine By Me”, and “Miss Me”. Even though it was just him on the stage with a guitar, his energetic sound filled up the space nicely. The connection with the crowd was easily felt with the nice introduction by Kelly Collis of 94.7 Fresh FM and a group of young fans. The audience also readily joined in with the very sing-able chorus of “Back Home”.

We have been so lucky the last few Fridays for this concert series! It was a perfect summer for Tysons Corner to open the Plaza to the public. So many have been able to enjoy the outdoor space and share their experience on social media, so I am sure that next summer’s series will have even more in the crowd! Thanks to Tysons Corner Center for giving me the opportunity to cover this series for them. It has been a lot of fun getting photos of the artists performing, and the crowd enjoying the music and the weather on these evenings.

Tonight is the last in the series, so you can still go and get your wristbands this morning to see Jacquie Lee perform. It looks like it will be another nice night to see an outdoor concert. Come out to hear the music, and come back to the blog to see the photos!
