Nikolai asked if I could take some graduation photos for him! Being that he has been my go-to assistant for many projects for the last couple of years, I happily made these for him. Prior to his arrival, I had a setup in mind that was at the ready. All of my lighting, and gear was set then mother nature changed things for us! Due to a driving rain, I could not do anything I had planned. Since we are both experienced photographers, we made changes quickly. For this reason, we headed to the forest!

Thankfully, the rain did let up a little. Under the thick leaf coverage of the park, we were somewhat protected. In spite of the rain, I still brought along a large flash outside. It was worth it to get high quality photos of Nikolai in his cap and gown. Although we are not family, I was very proud of his accomplishment. In light of how hard he works both at school, and at his part-time photography, I was amazed at his academic record! He will unquestionably will be successful as he has been in most endeavors so far. Hopefully he’ll take some time to reflect and celebrate it how much he has done already before shooting off to the next level. Congratulations, Nikolai!

As long as I have been making portraits, new year means new inquiries! 2017 January headshots requests are coming in like a needed resolution. Compared to most of my assignments, this the most different. For the most part, many of my subjects do not know that I am there. In other words, being quiet and non-distracting is a goal while I am working. This is surely not the case with headshots.

Although I am currently working on headshots, I am posting these sessions from last year. In general, I have a setup that I like to use that makes headshots flexible for lots of uses. As can be seen in these examples, I photograph you in front of a white seamless background. By and large this will work for most cases since you can easily remove the background.

Similarly, all of these examples are mobile lighting setups. If it is more convenient for your staff, I can bring my setup to where you are to get all the photos in one setting. Moreover, I find that some are more comfortable in their work space already, so it shows in their portraits! I’ll post soon with other examples from the studio for comparison. Happy new year!

JB Branding Session

Springfield, Virginia

This JB Branding session was a referral from Nam Nguyen. JB is one of his clients, and she was looking to upgrade her personal images. Seeing that these would be used for different purposes, the shoot involved different looks. When I arrived, Nam was finishing with her makeup. For the first setup, we went out to the garden. Since this was one of her passions, she wanted to have action photos of her working there. Due to the beautiful but large tree in her backyard, I brought out a large flash to light up her face. Balancing the flash with the tones of her plants, we had a natural look to these images that don’t look too artificial.

After changing out of her gardening clothes, she put on a solid top. Whenever I do a portrait shoot, I take time for a simple headshot. Because they are useful for many situations, I do this with every subject given that they have the time.

Similar to the gardening photos outside, we made some photos of her arranging flowers inside. In order to make sure she popped out of a very colorful frame, we chose a dark blue top. This color really complimented the colorful flowers!
