To celebrate the 2015 Lunar New Year at Tysons Corner Center, there was an event in their Concourse to show off Chinese culture. The Year of the Goat started on February 19. To attract visitors, there was a lot of color and sound echoing throughout the mall to signal what was going on that afternoon.

At the start of the Concourse there was a beautiful display of laterns and fruit that are symbols of luck for the new year. The eyes are drawn to all the color and motion that was on display. Luckily the mall had plenty of space for spectators to take in the action.

Demonstrations

Musicians played traditional instruments. One artist gave a demonstration of hanging traditional lanterns, and a group filled the hall with the sound of drumming. The most exciting display was the dancing Dragon that danced to the drums all around the Concourse and to part of the mall hallways to bring more into the audience. The dragon dancers interacted with some audience members that fed him lettuce for good luck.

Tommy McFly from 94.7 Fresh FM was the emcee for the events. He is always a professional welcoming everyone to the events in Tysons. He moved easily from in front of the crowd to in front of the camera to make sure everyone that participated had some shine throughout the afternoon. Happy new year!

2015 Corporate Staff Portraits

Tysons, Virginia

At the beginning of the new year, updating staff portraits is a popular assignment for me. Maybe getting a new headshot is a popular New Year’s resolution? The feeling of renewal extends to websites as well. I see lots of updates to my frequent stopping points online.

These headshots were made in a conference room. I brought a mobile lighting setup with a white cloth backdrop. One flash through a shoot – through umbrella was the main light, and another light was placed on camera right to light the background with a little kick to the side of the face.

This staff photo was a little nerve wracking for me. Not for anything having to do with me or my position for the photo, but for my subjects! The ice rink on the Plaza at Tysons Corner Center was the setting for this updated staff photo for CBRE. They were also the sponsor for the Zamboni machine that keeps this ice smooth. So the idea was to have the Zamboni out in the middle of the rink to provide the branding for the company as well as a focal point for the staff to pose for the photo. Because it was outside, I wanted to make the colors and faces pop from the background, so I set up one large 500 W/S flash to camera left. I did not have any modifiers on the light to ensure I got the most power out of the light that I could. I set it to ¾ power and I made a few frames.

I did not want to have them standing out there for too long since it was cold. Not to mention it was slippery since they were out on the ice! The staff of the ice rink did have some mats to help with the traction, but I still held my breath as they walked out there carefully. I only moved two people from their initial position to make a better composition, but I luckily, the results were great right out of the camera. Whew!

Lancaster Pennsylvania Covered Bridges

Earlier this month, we traveled to Lancaster County, PA to help another photographer cover a beautiful wedding. The road trip allowed for some time to explore this part of the country that is not that far, but one that I have not visited in a very long time! The helpful visitor’s center pointed out some of the places that would be great for out of town visitors to see. The highlight for me and my camera were the covered bridges! I cannot remember the last time I had come across these in my travels, so I was excited to get some photos while we were in the area.

Little did I know there were so many around! We could easily drive to a few in a day, spend some time making photos, and still do some other sightseeing. These bridges all came with information right by their entrances. You can read about their history, their construction, and how they have changed in function over the years.

They had a nice setting in the farming country of southern Pennsylvania. Surrounded by cornfields, and spanning the waterways that carried commerce from Amish farms to the towns really gives you the sense of their importance in the development of the area. Although many of the covered bridges have been replaced so many are still in use. They help to preserve the history, and add nicely to the landscape. I will definitely try to make it back to see others next time.
