Tysons Corner Center

To celebrate the 2015 Lunar New Year at Tysons Corner Center, there was an event in their Concourse to show off Chinese culture. The Year of the Goat started on February 19. To attract visitors, there was a lot of color and sound echoing throughout the mall to signal what was going on that afternoon.

At the start of the Concourse there was a beautiful display of laterns and fruit that are symbols of luck for the new year. The eyes are drawn to all the color and motion that was on display. Luckily the mall had plenty of space for spectators to take in the action.

Demonstrations

Musicians played traditional instruments. One artist gave a demonstration of hanging traditional lanterns, and a group filled the hall with the sound of drumming. The most exciting display was the dancing Dragon that danced to the drums all around the Concourse and to part of the mall hallways to bring more into the audience. The dragon dancers interacted with some audience members that fed him lettuce for good luck.

Tommy McFly from 94.7 Fresh FM was the emcee for the events. He is always a professional welcoming everyone to the events in Tysons. He moved easily from in front of the crowd to in front of the camera to make sure everyone that participated had some shine throughout the afternoon. Happy new year!

Happy Thursday! It’s my 38th birthday today, and time to update my portrait. Thanks for the all the messages on social media – it is really nice to have them stream in! it is one of the best things about the new technology. It is a great excuse to hear from people that you have not seen or talked to in a while. You can reminisce again about birthdays past and make plans for future celebrations! In addition to all the messages, I set up my camera to make a new self-portrait with some lighting.

My 25th birthday was marked by a day of national tragedy. We felt it here in the DC area, and the memory of the events will always be felt when the date comes around every year. The solemnness of ceremonies and memorials on TV and across the Internet lets me also be reflective on my own events. I can take things in; reflect on a milestone day along with everyone else, as a tribute to those that were taken that day, and to be thankful for another year.  It will be back tomorrow, but it’s nice to have a break from the norm. It is nice that so many do the same on your birthday, even if it borne out of sadness.

Happy Birthday!

We are planning another birthday celebration for my mother tonight! She has been very busy lately, and it can be tough to keep up with her schedule. Last weekend, she was a sponsor at a wedding that I photographed, so she was in many of the photos. Since I am still working on those images, I have not found any with her from Saturday, so those will have to wait. It’s a good thing, she has been a prolific photographer and photography subject for a long time!

Recently, I have had many of our old negatives scanned into digital form so that we can catalog them better. They were just sitting in drawers around her house and garage, and no one has seen them in a long time. It is time to really get them into a format that we can view and share them. I suggest that you do this while you still remember who is in these frames.

Just like with society at large, the number of our photos has exploded with digital technologies. But even in the film days, my parents were prolific shutterbugs. There are negatives, prints, and slides all over the place. I may never get to all of them, but it is worth the effort to try. There are so many great ways to share them online. It is not just your memories that you are sharing, it is so much fun to add them to the collective of your friends. This has been my favorite part of social media, and it probably fuels my photographic inspiration in my job. I feel like I am adding to personal histories, and I hope that my images will last at least as long as my family’s images. They are all worth preserving!
