This Monday is the last day to view Summer Showcase photos from the DC area Arthur Murray studios . Looking over my notes, there were a few of the shows that I still did not feature on the blog! I promise to get all of them on here, and I apologize for the delay. Today’s photos are from a Waltz by the Chevy Chase, MD studio. To see all the photos from this show and the other dancers from that event, please visit the proofing website here:

Of all the smooth dances, the Waltz is my current favorite. It will probably change as I get comfortable with a new figure, or hear an awesome Foxtrot musical track, but for now, I’m on a Waltz bandwagon! It is the first dance where I felt my partner and I could really move down the floor with a lot of distance. And it still feels “smooth” and flowing with less marching steps on each beat.

These two really took up the entire floor with their Waltz! It made for some easy photos at each click of the shutter. He really showed off the lady nicely! It can sometimes be a challenge to get both of their faces exposed to the camera in smooth dancing. But they both had showy, strong frames having good facial views for the audience.

Yes, I love the dip! A competition organizer pointed that out to me when I set out a collection of posters. The realization of it was shocking to me at the time, but I have embraced it. Especially when the back light shows up at just the right time. If that is a fault, I’ll take it! It’s important to realize you can be blind to tendencies looking at your work all the time!

Swing Professional Show – Arthur Murray | Ballroom Dance Photographer

Tysons, Virginia

It’s Freestyles week! The final preparations are underway for the DC Area Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles. We are getting the gear, and photos ready for this Friday where we will be at the McLean Hilton in Tysons Corner, VA. We are in for a great 2 days of dancing, and I know that the studios have been busy getting everyone ready. Today is the last day to vote for the posters that we will display at the event. There is a runaway vote-getter from the Ashburn studio, but there is still time to vote for others that we will display as space allows. You can go to the TimeLine Media Facebook page to vote by Liking your favorites:

Professional Staff Show

On this occasion, these photos are from an energetic, fun Triple Swing show by staff members from two different studios. It does not happen as often, but it is awesome to see the staff sharing their resources and putting combinations together for these. We have seen some great partnerships not only for shows, but for competition by having the staff cross over, and these two matched very well.

Swing dancing is popular not just in the ballroom world, but in social dancing. When you start to formally take dance lessons, this is usually one of the first dances that really gives you confidence as you start to learn figures. It is easier to feel the music, the steps are not as strict, and even the faces on people dancing loosen up a lot more in the Swing as can be seen!

This exhibition takes the Swing to another level. These two are very fast, and have some daring moves thrown in for good measure. I had a great time trying to keep up with all of the movements on the floor, and this resulted in a lot of images to choose from for their poster! Thanks to the Arthur Murray Chevy Chase, MD and Arthur Murray Ashburn, VA studios!

Analog Efex Pro 2 – Tech Thursday

Post Processing

There is a proliferation of images these days. Affordable digital cameras, and smartphones has made photography so accessible to so many. Looking on Flickr, one of the most used social networks for sharing photos shows that the 4 most popular cameras used in its community are iPhone models! With so many of these similar cameras in use, it is easy to see why Instagram, VSCO, and other filter apps are popular. They all have filters that allow users to easily change the default image coming out of the camera. There is enough in these apps that you can drastically change an image right on your phone prior to sharing. This adds to the popularity of taking and sharing images online.

For professional photographers, these kinds of tools have been available in Photoshop and Lightroom for many versions. The difference to me is the ease of use. The complexity of these programs keeps photographers from taking advantage of these tools. Lightroom does come with presets that can give your images different looks by applying adjusted sliders to an image. Instantly you can get a different look by changing color, contrast, or any of the sliders in Lightroom.

Software Plugin

Some functionality you cannot get in Lightroom includes adding frames edges, creating double exposures, or adding grunge with layers. This is a function that is typically done in Photoshop which is not really my specialty. That is where Analog Efex Pro 2 from the Google Nik Collection. This is a plugin for Photoshop that allows you to make changes like adding dust, grain, and light leaks. You can also add a grunge, or sloppy frame that makes your photo look like it was taken out of a developer bath in the darkroom.

Analog Efex Pro makes it easy for you to made adjustments using sliders. There is no complicated switches or menus that you encounter in Photoshop, so it makes it easier to experiment and try different settings before finalizing your image. I’ll post more about this new program as it is really in depth as to what you can do. It is very powerful, and a great tool to add to your post processing.
