2018 Emmes Headshots

Rockville, Maryland

Last year, I updated some portraits at a 2018 Emmes Headshots session at their Rockville, Maryland office. At this time, they were looking to have some new portraits of some high-performing employees for an upcoming meeting. Although I had a full mobile lighting setup with me, I also brought a hair and makeup artist with me. For the most part, everyone was camera-ready when we met, but a stylist can really make the post processing much faster by smoothing skin with some touch ups.

For headshots, the first thing to remember to keep the face the focus of the image. With this in mind, I needed to work with the client request to have their offices as the background. Luckily, they had a lot of nice candidates for backgrounds when I scouted areas in their building. In the first place, I wanted to find a spot with a clean seamless background. One hallway ended in a nice wall painted a dark blue gray. Overall, it worked nicely for a clean background without any distractions.

The other place I set up the light was in front of a frosted glass conference room wall. Not only was this set specifically in their office, but balancing it with a flash still put the focus on the face. I hope Emmes found these useful, and I thank my wife for the referral!

2019 Staff Headshots

Conference Room setup

Last month, I completed the 2019 Staff Headshots at Tysons Corner Center. Since they needed some updates for their staff photos, I set up a mobile setup in one of their conference rooms. Although they would not be in the studio, I have a mobile lighting setup that is of the same quality as a studio session. It is important to chiefly make these images look like they were in the studio, and not in a cramped room where they typically have meetings.

On this occasion, the biggest challenge was a large conference table that was not movable. Whereas the room was filled with conference room fixtures, the first task was to take out everything from the room to give us as much room to work. Instead of fighting with the large table, I took advantage by having my lighting in the middle of it! This brought the light as close to the subjects as possible.

Lastly, I had to setup a backdrop and reflector. While the main light was plenty for these, I could not setup a kicker of fill light. So, I was able to gaffer tape a reflector on a nearby wall to bounce back some light. This was just enough to recover some of the shadows which is my preferred set up for professional business portraits.

Fairfax, Virginia

In this post, I am highlighting some sessions I did for Fairfax Location Headshots. For both of these, I wanted to get some excellent results on account of them being business associates. Jhosua is the owner of Mix It Studios, a recording studio with a lot of technology and lighting already setup. To be sure I wanted to spend all the time asking him about all of the toys in his studio and what they do! But I did hold back enough to get some new headshots for Josh to use on his website.

Fairfax Station, Virginia

Kam is another good friend and business contact from networking in northern Virginia. At this time, she was opening her new State Farm office in Fairfax Station. Since her office was not quite open, she requested a seamless background for her headshot. Knowing her long career in banking, I know she will do well in her transition to insurance. I hope both enjoy their new marketing portraits!
