Silverline Center

Earlier this month, I covered the 2019 Candidate Forum for the Tysons Partnership. Above all, I am thankful to be working with them again in 2019! Similarly to other events, I was in unfamiliar territory. On this occasion, the venue was the Silverline Center in Tysons. The modern, colorfully lit exterior brings lot of attention to this building in the evening. Inside is a modern clean design throughout the space making it a nice venue in this case.

This is an election year for the Providence District Supervisor. In light of their impact that they will have in the Tysons area, the Partnership had this event to talk to some major stakeholders in the area. As far as photos go, this was a challenging room for positioning. Lighting was excellent as a conference venue. However, a large pylon in the middle of the room made a straight, wide angle perspective impossible. So, all the panoramic views were from a side. Other than that, it was a smooth shoot for me, and I hope the Partnership and the candidates find the images useful!

2019 Staff Headshots

Conference Room setup

Last month, I completed the 2019 Staff Headshots at Tysons Corner Center. Since they needed some updates for their staff photos, I set up a mobile setup in one of their conference rooms. Although they would not be in the studio, I have a mobile lighting setup that is of the same quality as a studio session. It is important to chiefly make these images look like they were in the studio, and not in a cramped room where they typically have meetings.

2019 Staff Headshots

On this occasion, the biggest challenge was a large conference table that was not movable. Whereas the room was filled with conference room fixtures, the first task was to take out everything from the room to give us as much room to work. Instead of fighting with the large table, I took advantage by having my lighting in the middle of it! This brought the light as close to the subjects as possible.

Lastly, I had to setup a backdrop and reflector. While the main light was plenty for these, I could not setup a kicker of fill light. So, I was able to gaffer tape a reflector on a nearby wall to bounce back some light. This was just enough to recover some of the shadows which is my preferred set up for professional business portraits.

Alden Theatre, McLean, Virginia

Recently I photographed an Open Mic Night event for TEDxTysons. In similar fashion to popular talent shows on TV, potential speakers are pulled out of the audience. Even though they would not be giving a full talk, they would give a preview for judges and the audience to review. There was an initial call for applications so there was some culling before the event. 25 speakers then had their chance in front of the audience to pitch their talk.

Open Mic Night TEDxTysons – Speakers

At stake during this event was an opportunity to give a full talk at the upcoming main event this fall! Not only were they competing against each other, but there was an encouraging spirit in the crowd. Even with all the culling, there was still just a small chance of having the main stage this fall. Contestants were encouraging and supportive throughout the night. For sure, even if they were not picked this time, there are future TEDx speakers that gave their first looks tonight!
